Project Overview
Before selling its Brandenburg, Kentucky site, Lonza needed obsolete process plants, structures, and piping removed from the property. Phoenix Equipment entered into an agreement to purchase several idled facilities and take responsibility for their dismantlement and removal.
The acquisition included an ethylene plant, ethylene oxide plant, urethane plant, site boiler house, site compressor house, and more than 20 additional structures. The contract generated revenue for Lonza while giving the company a defined path to clear obsolete infrastructure before transferring the property to a new owner. The approximately $5 million project ran from August 2012 through December 2013.
Preparing the Site for Dismantlement
The scope required substantial environmental preparation before equipment recovery and structural demolition could proceed. Phoenix completed more than $1.5 million of asbestos abatement across the acquired plants and structures.
Following abatement, Phoenix recovered reusable process equipment, dismantled the obsolete facilities, removed piping and structures, and cleared the remaining slabs and concrete pedestals.
Asset Recovery & Recycling
Phoenix preserved more than 100 pieces of process equipment for resale rather than sending those assets directly into the scrap stream.
The project also generated substantial recycling volume, including more than 12,000 tons of carbon steel and over 1,000,000 pounds of alloy metal. Equipment resale and metal recovery allowed Phoenix to capture value from the idled facilities while completing the broader removal scope.
Project Outcome
Phoenix completed removal of the obsolete plants, structures, piping, slabs, and concrete pedestals before the property transferred to its new owner.
For Lonza, the agreement generated revenue from assets no longer needed while ensuring obsolete infrastructure was removed before the site sale.

Clearing the Site Before Property Transfer
